Prime Mushroom Tanzania is a biotechnology-based startup the first of its kind in Tanzania that deals with commercial production of mushrooms for food and medicinal purposes using sustainable technology.

20% of Africa’s population is undernourished. Healthy diets especially proteins, are often expensive and inaccessible for many. Mushrooms stand out as an alternative protein solution. So we created Prime Mushrooms Tanzania to produce quality mushrooms and make these nutrient dense foods accessible for all.
Our mushrooms are grown indoors using controlled farming systems, this ensures consistent quality and year around availability for consumers.
Achievements
Within just two years, Prime Mushrooms Tanzania has successfully raised over $30,000 in private donations from supporters in the USA and won a grant award from 2025 Tony Elumelu Foundation Entrepreneurship Programme. (2025 TEF). These funds have been instrumental in developing, testing, and establishing a sustainable business. Beyond funding, Prime Mushrooms has also achieved the following:
Feasibility Study
We conducted a research survey on the nature of the mushroom industry and market opportunities across 5 regions in Tanzania (Morogoro, Dar-es-salaam, Zanzibar Iringa and Arusha. This research included mushroom cultivators, consumers, governmental and non-governmental organizations and food businesses like supermarkets, hotels and restaurants .
Pilot Facility in USA
Tested smart production technology, validating its potential for large-scale implementation in Tanzania.

Spawn Production in the Laboratory
Collaborations with professionals from the Sokoine University of Agriculture has enabled access to laboratory facilities, facilitating the production of high-quality mushroom seeds (spawn). We have managed to produce over 1000 jars (350g) of mushroom spawns which over 30 local growers have benefited from them.
Construction of a Modern Mushroom Facility
Successfully constructed a modern container-based mushroom production facility. This facility is integrated with environment control systems to enable consistent commercial production of quality mushrooms throughout the year independent of the external climatic condition. This is the first kind of facility in the country. The site is located at Kihonda Morogoro.
